The Petrochemicals & Alcohol Chemicals Division

A World-Class Petrochemical resource

In 1989,the Oswal Agro Group acquired the sophisticated Union Carbide petrochemical Petrochemicals Complex Photographcomplex at Bombay.Spreading over 64 acres, this centrally located unit is India's only private sector petrochemical complex that has facilities for naptha/natural gas cracking and LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) manufacture. The technology for the project has been provided by Union Carbide,USA.

The Plant receives its primary raw material, naphtha,(a petroleum product) through pipelines laid directly from the neighbouring Hindustan Petroleum refinery.Naphtha is cracked to yield ethylene, benzene, propylene, toluene, dripolene and acetylene.Ethylene is further used to manufacture LDPE.

Acetylene is used for production of acetylene black which is used in dry cell batteries.

The Complex also has facilities to manufacture Alcohol based chemicals such as Acetic Acid,Butanol,Butyl Acetate,Ethyl Acetate and Ethylene out of industrial alcohol using Union Carbide technology.

Other important applications of the products of this complex are in there of dyes, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, tarpaulines, engineering plastics and detergents.

PARTICULARS OF INSTALLED ANNUAL CAPACITIES

Class of Goods Unit Installed Capacity(as on 1996)
-------------------------- ---------- --------------------------------------------
Polyethylene M.T. 20000
Ind. Alcohol M.T. 9450
based chemicals
Benzene M.T. 8000
Acetylene Black M.T. 890

Oswal Agro Group acquired another LDPE manufacturing facility of 13,500 TPA capacity based on industrial Alcohol from ICI India Ltd. in the year 1987 at Calcutta. The basic raw material for this plant i.e industrial alcohol was imported from U.P.State. However, due to restriction imposed by the state government of U.P. for movement of industrial alcohol, the production activity had to be suspended in 1993.

The above facilities are now being re-located at Shahjahanpur by Oswal Chemicals & Fertilizers, adjacent to the Group's Fertilizer plant with supporting facilities such as a distillery of 120 Kilo Litres per day capacity to produce industrial alcohol out of molasses for captive use and a most modern Effluent Treatment Plant which will provide bio-gas as a bye-product.

The Plant will enjoy the benefit of abundant availability of molasses and industrial alcohol as state of U.P. is the major producer of sugar and molasses is a bye-product of sugar industry.
